Projects

Quantification of Inertia on Electrical Power Systems to Support Integration of Renewables (QUINPORTION)
Feng, Zhiwang (Principal Investigator) Seferi, Yljon (Principal Investigator) Burt, Graeme (Principal Investigator) Munro, Richard (Technician)
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement No. 870620, with a total grant of €29,922.

This joint research project, in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology METAS (Switzerland), develops and experimentally validates novel phasor measurement unit (PMU) based approaches for real-time grid stability assessment and inertia level tracking.
10-Jan-2025 - 07-Jan-2025
Developing and Validating Digital Twins of Active Distribution Networks (DGNet)
Feng, Zhiwang (Principal Investigator) Burt, Graeme (Principal Investigator) Munro, Richard (Technician)
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement No. 870620, with a total grant of €19,948.

This joint research project, in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), develops reduced-order equivalent models of active distribution networks that can act as Digital Twins (DTs). Power hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulations are leveraged to validate the applicability and fidelity of the proposed DTs.
28-Jan-2024 - 11-Jan-2024
Cyber-Attack Investigations on GFL and GFM Inverters of a Microgrid (CAILIM)
Feng, Zhiwang (Principal Investigator) Burt, Graeme (Principal Investigator) Munro, Richard (Technician)
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement No. 870620, with a total grant of €49,870.

This joint research project, in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens (Greece), assessed the impact of cyberattacks on the primary and secondary control layers of inverter-dominated microgrids and developed novel schemes to enhance microgrid resilience against cyberattacks on the phase-locked-loop (PLL) of grid-following converters.
14-Jan-2024 - 26-Jan-2025
Wind Power Plants in Dynamic States of the Power Grid (WindGrid)
Feng, Zhiwang (Principal Investigator) Burt, Graeme (Principal Investigator) Munro, Richard (Technician)
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement No. 870620, with a total grant of €17,953.

This joint research project, in collaboration with the AGH University of Science and Technology (Poland), conducts power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) experiments to validate and test two key methods: the grid-tie voltage source converter-based grid voltage compensation method and the islanding detection method, particularly focusing on the renewable-rich microgrid context.
03-Jan-2024 - 12-Jan-2024
Developing Digitally Twin Distribution Network Equivalent Models (iniTiate)
Feng, Zhiwang (Principal Investigator) Burt, Graeme (Principal Investigator) Munro, Richard (Technician)
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement No. 870620, with a total grant of €19,948.

This joint research project, in collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace (Greece) and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), conducts power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) experiment to develop and test digitally twinned distribution network equivalent models, which are designed to effectively replicate the dynamic behaviours of all interconnected network components.
25-Jan-2023 - 07-Jan-2023
Advanced GPT Inverter Physical Demonstration (AGIPDem)
Feng, Zhiwang (Principal Investigator) Burt, Graeme (Principal Investigator) Munro, Richard (Technician)
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme under Grant Agreement No. 870620, with a total grant of €29,922.

This joint research project, in collaboration with the University of Cape Town (South Africa), conducts power hardware-in-the-loop experimental validation of the novel General Power Theory (GPT) control-based converters and demonstrates their effectiveness in reducing the distribution losses of the distribution networks.
